History, Culture and Candy in Downtown Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL, United States

Hello! My name is Katherine and I'll be taking you on this tour of Jacksonville, presented by Insight Guides, which will take around two and a half hours, not including visiting any museums or buildings along the tour.

You can stop at any time and start again at the same spot later. You can follow the route on your phone, or simply listen as I guide you from one sight to the next. I'll be giving you clear directions and the audio will automatically start playing when you get close to the next site on the tour. Don't worry if you need to skip a sight as the tour will pick up at the next location. One more thing before we get started – always be aware of your surroundings and be sure to obey all traffic signals.

Formerly known as the hardworking brother in a playboy family, Jacksonville is shedding that image fast. More and more people are discovering the attractions that this underrated city has to offer.

Also known as the River City, much of Jacksonville's history revolves around St. Johns River, which began life as a “cow ford," that is now the heart of Jacksonville. It was here that the cracker cowboys, as early Florida cattle ranchers were called, could get their cattle across the river. This is now the downtown area and where our tour begins.

Jacksonville is the largest city in the country. As with any big metropolitan area, it pays to exercise a little caution. Look out for ambassadors patrolling on bikes or on foot, wearing orange jackets, who will happily answer questions and provide assistance if necessary.

Ready to begin? Then let's head to our first stop, a historic theater with an interesting museum.
