The Decemberist Uprising can be confidently called the largest political demonstration of the nobility. On December 26, 1825, a large number of revolutionary officers gathered at Senate Square in St. Petersburg. Their goal was to establish a constitutional monarchy in the state and abolish selfdom. The young men fought for a great cause, not afraid of death. The ideas and aspirations of the Decembrists meant and still mean a lot.In Belarus, the beginning of the movement was associated with the transfer of the Petersburg Guard regiment here in 1821. Members of the Decembrist "Northern Society" served in it. Nikita Muravyov, the founder of the society and one of the main ideologists of the movement, also served there.Nikita Mikhailovich Muravyov arrived in Minsk as a 26-year-old lieutenant. By that time, the young officer had participated in the creation of several secret organizations in St. Petersburg: the Union of Salvation, the Union of Prosperity, and the Northern Society. Upon his arrival, Muravyov began developing the "Minsk version" of the Constitution, which he completed in St. Petersburg in 1824.
