 The first colonists arrived to the “futur old port” by the st. Lawrence region. Thanks to the port the old Ville-Marie became an international metropolis. The port started to develop since the foundation of Montreal by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. In the 18th and 19th centuries the port was the main place for commerce. At the beginning it was fur trade and step by step it became a transoceanic commerce thanks to the evolution of ships and the arrival of the first railroad. In nowadays the old port isn’t just a commercial site, it’s also a must to visit for the tourists because it became the jewel of Montreal.The Old Port is also a multicultural place, for example: you can watch international movies in the Science Center, multicultural exhibitions are often organized in the Pointe-à-Callière museum. You can assist a free Orientalys Festival on the Jacques-Cartier place.
