Welcome to Saint-Jean-de-Fos, a small village of 1700 inhabitants located 40 km West of Montpellier. The village developed around its Romanesque church, Saint Jean-Baptiste, following the construction of the Devil's Bridge. The Devil’s Bridge is said to have been built between 1028 and 1031, making it one of the oldest medieval bridges in France. It is the result of an agreement between the two abbeys, located on either side of the Hérault, that of Aniane and that of Gellone in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert.The first mention of Saint-Jean-de-Fos dates back to 1146, in a papal bull by Eugene III listing the possessions of the monastery of Gellone, then 1162, when King Louis VII gave authorization to build fortifications and a tower. At the end of the 12th century, the village was surrounded by ramparts, of which the Clock Tower was one of the two entrance gates. The current tower is established in the same location, but may have been rebuilt later. The nave of the current church dates from the 12th century.Saint-Jean-de-Fos became renown thanks to its potters, since the 15th century, and the traditional green and yellow glazed pottery is still visible in the streets of the village through several elements, such as (gutters and downspouts, the roof tiles of the church.Every year, there is a pottery market in the village which takes place on the first weekend of August and attracts a large number of enthusiasts of pottery. This walk will allow us to discover the known and less known monuments that are in the oldest part of the village.
