Welcome to Massa Marittima, in the heart of Maremma, about 15 kilometers from the sea. The city's history is intimately linked to the mines of the Metalliferous Hills exploited from the Prehistory. Henry the 4th emblazoned Massa on the title of “Town", the Middle Ages was  the period of its greatest economic and artistic expansion. It became Episcopal site after receiving the remains of St. Cerbone Bishop, patron saint of the Diocese of Massa and Piombino. It was free commune from 1225 to 1335, with its own measurements, currency and army. In the medieval period the city was divided into three districts which are called Terzieri: Città Vecchia, Città Nuova and Borgo. The Town was an important mining center until the pyrite mines in this district ended their activities in the seventies. Today our city has become an important tourist destination, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in the province of Grosseto. Let's explore this pearl of Maremma together!
