An open hand is the beautiful insignia adorning the Sienese lion, emblem of Manciano, as it makes the town’s hospitality explicit. On a hilltop which dominates a great part of the Maremma area, this town rises like a beacon or lookout, controlling a wide expanse reaching from the mountains of Corsica to the Gran Sasso massif.  As our eyes span the panorama, we see a generous, suggestive land, which adds to the plain’s fruitfulness the mysterious fascination of a dense maquis, not too long ago the den of fierce adventurers…Manciano emerged around the year 1000 and became a property of the House of Aldobrandeschi. Contended over in the 1300s by Orvieto, the Orsinis and Siena, it was finally conquered by the latter in 1416, thus entering the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the second half of the 1500s. During the Medicean period it was a minor urban area, but at the end of the 1700s under the rule of the House of Lorena, Manciano underwent rapid development, which reached its peak between the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s.
