Lembah Bujang – the name itself suggests mystery and adventure. This was an ancient crossroads, reached when traders travelled across the Indian Ocean, in merchant vessels, riding on elephants across the Malay Peninsula, to reach the South China Sea. This ancient landscape was home to a collection of different chiefdoms, which flourished from the First Century AD, right until the beginning of the 15th century. After which, the rise of the Sultanate of Malacca and later Singapore, moved the focus of maritime trade in Southeast Asia further south. Whereas the footprints of these early traders have long since faded, many of their monuments survive. They prove that this fertile plain, and the bays and inlets surrounding it, once served as a cradle of civilisation, whose importance was far greater than its size. The content of this tour was created by the School of Architecture, Building and Design of Taylor’s University with the support of Cultural Economy Catalytic Grants by Think City Sdn Bhd.
