On 30 March 2009, President Barack Obama signed Public Law No. 111-11 which created the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail. The trail begins in Newport, Rhode Island, and runs parallel to the East Coast, extending almost 800 miles south to Yorktown, Virginia. This trail was used in the Revolutionary War by soldiers of the Continental Army, under the command of General George Washington, and the French Army, under the command of General Comte de Rochambeau.Rochambeau’s forces, comprised of 450 officers and 5,300 men, landed in Newport, Rhode Island in July of 1780. The French army began its march south in June of 1781 and joined up with Washington’s Continental Army in Phillipsburg, New York on 4 July of that same year. The two armies then continued their march toward Yorktown, Virginia, where British General Lord Cornwallis was positioned with his 9,000 British soldiers. After arriving in Yorktown on 28 September, the combined American and French forces began a siege, trapping Cornwallis and his British Army in Yorktown until their surrender on 19 October 1781. The trail was used for a second time by the French in 1782 on their return north. This time, the French would march to Boston, Massachusetts, where they would sail out of Boston Harbor on Christmas Day 1782 In this tour, listeners will be introduced to the history of various sites across New Jersey that hold great significance to the Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary Route as well as the entire war. Listeners will be able to visit these historical sites and actively follow the steps of the French and American soldiers as they marched toward victory.
