Earl B. Miller Japanese Garden
The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden on the campus of California State University, Long Beach was opened in April of 1981, dedicated to the late Earl Burns Miller by his wife Loraine Miller Collins. The garden was dedicated as an educational and aesthetic resource for the campus and the community. The Garden itself was designed by Ed Lovell, California State University Long Beach's head landscape architect at the time, with assistance from Professor Koichi Kawana, who had designed many public Japanese gardens across the U.S. Its style was meant to be reminiscent of gardens the Millers had visited in Kyoto, rather than Western or European designs. This special place on campus is more than just a Garden. We are a living museum, with a collection of live plants and animals. Each tree is sculpted like a fine art piece and the hardscape items have all been carefully curated and placed to adhere to the style and significance of the art of the Japanese garden.
