Anduze : ses sources et fontaines

The town of Anduze has never lacked water: an efficient network of waterponds and pipes collected and distributed water from springs to the various districts of the town. The Galinière and Duminy springs from the St Julien Rock supplied the 7 public fountains with crystal-clear, pure water. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Fontaine de Madame d'Anduze spring in Poulverel supplied water to four mills for a part of the year, and its stream fed the Figuière spring, known as the Source du Moulin à Papier, which kept the Figuière mill running. It is located on the outskirts of Anduze, in the direction of Nîmes. The "Bombe Robinette", "Fond Fassot" and "Pierres Onches" springs supplied a water basin that distributed water to fountains and the Parc des Cordeliers. Today, the Bombe Robinette spring continues to flow, and a plaque was unveiled in September 2021 in the Cordeliers Park. The Font-Fossot spring, at the top of the Alès hill, provided the stagecoach's horses with clear, cool water to drink after the effort of the climb. The Olivier and Grande Pallière streams supplied a canal that crossed the Labahou plain, and enabled the operation of a wheat mill and a fulling mill. Veyrac is the area of white waters; where springs and sources flow and fill waterponds to power the two mills.   The Peyremale rock has a very deep crevice, called the baume de Trentenaille, which forms an underground lake, spilling over numerous waterfalls and crevices during heavy rains. On the road to Générargues, there used to be a source called "Cantarane", meaning "frogs' song", where the sheer rock has a reddish colour.  This source made the fulling mill work. Some of these sources are still flowing, but they are more visible when there is heavy rain.
