With this itinerary, the students of the Sant'Agostino Educational Directorate incollaboration with the experts of Sciacca’s widespread Museum of the 5 Senses will takeyou through the streets of a neighbourhood, a village of Sciacca where treasures ofinestimable value are preserved.The urban fabric of Sciacca is spread over three levels. the seaside village of Sciacca,constituted by the sailors; neigh bourhood and the port; the central part, represented by thedistrict where the noble families once resided and later the artisans' workshops. Andfinally, the upper village, from which we start our tour, mainly inhabited by farmers stilltoday.Starting from “Torre Campanaria” (Bell Tower), which offers from high above abreathtaking sight of the city, we go up to one of Sciacca’s religious sites, “Chiesa di SanMichele Arcangelo”, where part of the Holy Thorns of Jesus Christ’s Crown are preserved,we continue knowing one of Sciacca’s most important families, the Peraltas, anddiscovering one of the identity delicacies of Sciacca, the “ova murina”, realised by thesisters of the monastery “Badia Grande”, “Bata Ranni” in Sicilian. Before exiting GerardoNoceto Square we are going to find out why at the entrance of a church, “Chiesa delGiglio”, there are 4 cannonballs walled. Going through the old walls that defended the city,the “Mura di Vega”, we arrive at Lunas of Aragon’s Castle, the theatre of a bloody storythat involved another powerful family of Sciacca, the Perollos. Then, arriving at“Giummare”’s monastery we tell you the amazing story of the benefactor father, DonMichele Arena, and of Giummarello, the little donkey helping him do good to all the peoplewho needed it. Finally, we reach “Chiesa di Sant’Agostino”, the church where the“Madonna del Soccorso” statue was originally kept, the Virgin Mary, to whom Sciacca isparticularly bonded. Translated by Francesco Ferrara
