Castelo de São JorgeThe Castelo de São Jorge is a national monument sitting at the top a hill which has preserved traces of the many peoples who passed through and settled here, from the founding of Lisbon in the 7th century BC to the present day. In the Middle Ages it was located in the noble area of the city (the alcaçova or citadel) which had become Lisbon’s political and economic centre during the Islamic occupation. The medieval alcaçova consisted of three distinct parts: the castle, with a military role; the Royal Palace, the primary residence of the kings of Portugal; and the residential area, which was occupied by the urban elites. From a military point of view, the castle formed the last stronghold of a complex defence system that protected the city, made up of two rings of walls. Its construction dates back to the 11th century, during the period of Islamic rule, but over the course of time it has been gradually transformed by the numerous alterations made to it.Schedules9am – 9pm (March to October)9am – 6pm (November to February)Last entry30 minutes before closing timeClosedJanuary 1st | May 1st | December 24th, 25th and 31stWhat to seeCastleMuseumArchaeological site (Restricted access)Camera ObscuraViewpointServicesGuided toursCafe and RestaurantShopCashpoint machine (ATM)Lost propertyContactsCastelo de São Jorge,Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo1100-129 Lisboa, Portugal+351 218 800 620 Call to national landline networkinfo@castelodesaojorge.ptwww.castelodesaojorge.ptFacebook/castelodesaojorge/Instagram@castelodesjorgeHow to arriveBus 737Tramcar 12, 28ParkingPortas do SolChão do Loureiro
