Stories from Penguin's Heritage Cemetery
Let me introduce you to our heritage listed Penguin General Cemetery, and we invite you too to join the ranks of its friends.
For a town’s population of under 4000, located between Burnie and Devonport in North West Tasmania, our much loved cemetery is highly regarded.
Those buried here are our forebears, residents who forged Penguin into what it is today. So it behoves us to remember them, to honour them and to bring them in, to include them.
In wandering around our cemetery you’ll see some very, very old tombstones, many of which are badly damaged, calling out for some TLC. You’ll also see lots of unmarked graves, graves maybe that once held a headstone, our long-forgotten ancestors.
All of which can be so easily remediated.
So why not adopt a grave yourself, passing forward your own good fortune. Honouring a total stranger. A thank you.
Good as our burial records are, huge gaps remain in our online database. Christian names, death dates and so on. A death simply recorded as Wife 1 or Wife 2 for example.
So we welcome you and thanks for dropping by. Please do enjoy our offering.
