With a population of around 200,000, the city of Linz straddles the Danube River midway between Salzburg and Vienna. Baroque buildings, including former town hall, Altes Rathaus and the old cathedral or Alter Dom, ring Hauptplatz, the old town's main square. The riverside Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz has a major modern art collection. Across the river, the striking Ars Electronica Center focuses on society, technology and life in the future.
Lizz is an ideal destination for a day trip by car or train from Vienna or Salzburg, but there is plenty to see and do to warrant a longer visit. The journey to Linz, which is about half way between Salzburg and Vienna in northern Austria just 30 km from the Czech border, takes just over an hour by train.
