This tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at the furniture designers and makers based in and around Sydney’s creative centre – Surry Hills. Australia’s manufacturing industry lacks the manufacturing tradition of Italy or Scandinavia. But this makes it all-the-more interesting. It’s for this reason that Sydney’s designer makers need to be creative both in terms of the work they produce and the way in which it is manufactured and distributed. Some choose to laboriously make their products by hand, while others work closely with local manufacturers, designers and architects to see their designs come to fruition. Aside from offering an insight into how these designers work, the tour also takes you to some of the Surry Hills stores that specialise in stocking Australian made furniture, and therefore help to support and promote the Australian design industry at large.
