Washington just oozes global power. You look at the Capitol building and know that it controls much of what the world does through military might, genuine democratic influence and commercial muscle. Washington has great museums, political institutions to visit and very moving historic sites like the Lincoln Memorial which pays huge tribute to the man who eventually ended slavery and where Martin Luther King made his "I have a Dream" speech.
