Penamacor was one of the most important fortresses of the Portuguese frontier. Its origin as administrative center goes back to the 12th century, when King D. Sancho I concedes by Royal Charter the creation of Penamacor County in 1209. To this day there are still monuments which confirm the military strategic importance of Penamacor, along with othe remarkable monuments.
