The Italian connection to Lygon Street has been a long lasting one, from its beginning’s in the 19th century, to the mass migration of the post war years, and up to today’s new Italian community, each generation has contributed in some way to the creation of Melbourne’s ‘Little Italy’. However, throughout the years, more and more of the Italian-Australian heritage associated with Lygon Street has been in danger of being lost to time due to the lack of preservation. The places that will be visited on this tour all play an important part within the narrative of the street’s history and its importance within the identity and heritage of the Italian-Australian community connected to it.
