St. Katherine's Church and St Helena Cemetery: Introduction - Cya On The Road

Both the St Helena Cemetery and St. Katherine’s Anglican Church are recognised as places of heritage and historical importance. The Heritage Council of Victoria lists the cemetery as having State significance, while St. Katherine’s Church is included in the heritage overlay of the St Helena area.[1] This walking tour will take you along a short route through the churchyard cemetery, explaining the significance of the site along the way. The tour will visit the graves of various people buried here, all of whom contributed to Victoria’s history in some way, learning about what and how they contributed to our history.  It is important to note that while the cemetery is always open to public access, St. Katherine’s Church is only open during Church activities, and therefore the tour will not enter the Church. Where needed, the tour includes photographs of the inside of the Church, however this is not vital to understanding its overall impact on the history of St Helena.[1]Victorian Heritage Database Report, St Helena Cemetery, Heritage Council Victoria, Melbourne, 2005, p.1 <https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/64365/download-report>, accessed 1 May 2019; and Victorian Heritage Database Report, St Katherine's Anglican Church and Cemetery, Heritage Council Victoria, Melbourne, 2005, p. 1, https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/31426/download-report, accessed 1 May 2019.
