Exploring the Mediterranean Idiom in Moreland

📍 Brunswick, VIC, Australia; Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Estimated distance & time: 1.1km / 31 mins

The aspect of migrant heritage, a significant theme in Australia’s history, is often overlooked in statutory planning instruments. In this regard, it can be said that the heritage system and associated discourse values built heritage such as the opulently detailed Victorian terraces and distinctive Queen Anne style villas that dominate statutory heritage lists and registers, over fabric that might not necessarily be considered aesthetic, but tells an important and layered story of our past. This program presents these ideas through a walking tour of a Brunswick neighbourhood, visiting various examples of residential migrant heritage and observing the different ways in which migrant families transformed these homes, which ultimately could have been considered ‘official’ heritage today, representative of an earlier period of development in Moreland, had they not been adapted in the post-war years.
