This tour will take the visitor on a brief journey through the history of the Canberra region by focussing on notable mountains in the area. Canberra’s peaks not only provide spectacular views, many of them are also home to places of significance. This tour will take a local approach, as opposed to the overly repeated Canberra narrative of nation building. Along the way, we will hear some local stories while we explore these mountain tops and learn about the successes and challenges of their conservation. To the Ngunnawal people, the entire Canberra region is sacred. Their connection to the land extends at least 21,000 years into the deep past. As well as on mountain tops, evidence of their habitation is found scattered throughout valleys and riverbeds in the entire region.
