Jeravna,Bulgaria - Cya On The Road

The village of Zheravna is located in a small valley in the eastern part of the Balkan Mountains at 630 meters above sea level. The village has 330 houses and about 500 inhabitants. The climate is mountainous - with mild winters and cool summers. The minimum temperatures in January drop to -10 ° С, and the maximum in July is around 32 ° С. In 1958, Zheravna was declared an architectural reserve by law and today is a world-famous tourist destination, visited by over 20,000 tourists each year. The village was in its heyday during the Renaissance, with a population of 4,000 until the Liberation. The main livelihood was sheep-breeding, but along with it came many craftsmen - shoemakers, abadjii, furriers, slippers, goldsmiths, as well as carpenters, blacksmiths, butchers, bakers, barbers, coffee makers and others. Houses were built along the entire length of the main street, the first floor of which served as shops and workshops. The village is also known for its numerous fountains, some of which are more beautiful with bizarre spouts. Numerous springs gush in the area, most of which have been inserted into the spouts of fountains (Krincha, Starcha, Zaykovka) since time immemorial.Zheravna is one of the wonders of the Bulgarian master builder, as most of the houses are a complete architectural image with a unique artistic form. In general, the authentic Revival appearance has been preserved - narrow cobbled streets and one-storey or two-storey wooden houses surrounded by stone walls. Some of the houses are more than 300 years old. Each of them is a unique cultural monument. They are made of oak planks and have wide verandas and eaves up to 2 meters deep.Apart from being a shopping center, Zheravna was also a cultural center for the region. The Hilendar Monastery had its own convent in the village, which is preserved to this day. It is believed that this is where the transcript of "Slavo-Bulgarian History" was made.Zheravna offers good opportunities for recreation and tourism - in recent years private owners are restoring old houses and turning them into comfortable accommodation, preserving the Revival style and architecture. The sights in the village are:- Church of St. Nicholas (1834)- House Museum "Sava Filaretov" - Exposition "History of Zheravna"- House Museum "Rusi Chorbadji" - Exposition "Life and culture of Zheravna during the Revival"- House Museum "Yordan Yovkov"Apart from the cultural heritage, the region attracts tourists with its pleasant climatic conditions for rest and opportunities for active tourism. One attraction that attracts a lot of interest is the possibility of horseback riding.
