Connecting the old town to the Canale Maestro della Chiana (a man-made waterway running through the Valdichiana) and the Sentiero della Bonifica foot-and cycleway, this path was created by linking together two of several trails (18) previously identified as part of the 2013 GAL project, namely the Sentiero dei Principi, linking the Sentiero della Bonifica to the hamlet of Sodo, and the Via Teutonica, leading up the hill from Sodo to the old town; this, together with the newly established archaeological park (MAECparco), has made Sodo a key link in the local path network. The path known as Sentiero dei Principi was named after the impressive burial mounds – locally known as “meloni” due to their hemispherical shape – discovered near the hamlet and identified as the possible resting place of prominent Etruscan princes. The path consists of two distinct sections running respectively from Sodo along the banks of the Rio di Loreto and from Camucia along the banks of river Esse; at Molinaccio, both streams flow into stream Mucchia which, in turn, flows into the Canale Maestro della Chiana linking the Sentiero dei Principi to the Sentiero della Bonifica. The path is dotted with several sights and places of archaeological, historical and landscape interest, including the Melone I and II at Sodo, distinctive farmhouses known as “leopoldine”, one of the last reamining rammed earth houses in the Valdichiana as well as wetlands and waterways forming unique wildlife corridors. At Sodo, the path merges into the Via Teutonica, now renamed Via Romea Germanica. The trail retraces the route anciently used by German pilgrims (whence its name) on their way to Rome; part dirt/gravel, part asphalt, the Cortona section of the path runs north to south from Mezzavia to Terontola, where it continues on to Lake Trasimeno. The trail winds its way through fields, terraced olive groves and villages. Sights and places of historical, archaeological and landscape interest along the route include Villa Laparelli at Sodo, the terraced olive groves overlooking the countryside and the Cimitero Monumentale della Misericordia (monumental graveyard). From there a short, but fairly steep walk through the Porta Santa Maria gate and up narrow streets lined with medieval houses (Via Jannelli - Via del Gesù, named after the namesake church, which can still be seen at the upper end of the street) and by the cathedral of Santa Maria and the Museo Diocesano takes you to the Palazzo Casali, located in the heart of the old town, where the MAEC museum and the welcome and information point are housed.
