The path picks up where the Sentiero dei Principi, coming from Cortona, comes to an end at Porto a Brolio. Heading towards Foiano della Chiana, we first cross the Canale Maestro della Chiana and then the “allacciante di sinistra” (left-bank junction canal); in both cases access to the opposite bank of the canal is provided by interesting Zorès-type iron bridges which were built at different times (1885-1890) as the canalization of Chiana was progressing to completion. The first part of the path runs through an area which, over the past centuries, was subjected to extensive land-reclamation works and subsequently saw the establishment of a network of farms which came into existence as a result of the renewed availability of cultivable land. The path runs along the border between the farms of Pozzo (north-facing side) and Foiano (south-facing side). Past the “Fosso del Terchio”, the path runs straight for some way before bending to the right and crossing the new by-pass off the Provinciale 327. It, then, crosses the Via del Porto where once stood the “porto a Brolio”, the old point of departure for boats out to Castiglion Fiorentino, located across the valley.  Before its reclamation, the marshy Valdichiana could be extensively navigated across and the presence of berthing and mooring facilities is still evident in local toponyms. In historical times, the Valdichiana was home to a flourishing fishing and marshland herb farming industry and was also crossed by a number of important trade routes running along its waterways and crossings. At the crossroads with the Via del Porto, we come across the church dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie (Holy Virgin of the Graces); past the church, the path carries on straight ahead to the village. From the crossroads, we may also make a number of detours from the main path: turning off to the right (white roadside signs) some two km down the “Via del Porto”, we come to the war cemetery at Renzino; turning off to the left some 500 m down the road, we come to the Cimitero Monumentale (monumental graveyard) of Foiano della Chiana. From the graveyard we may also carry on to the old town walking up the Via del Cimitero.From the crossroads with the Via del Porto, the path carries on up the hill along the Via della Repubblica first and then along the Via del Bottaio to eventually cross and continue along the Via del Cimitero. The path enters the old town through the north-east gate, known as the Chiane gate, and from there into the Piazza della Collegiata, which reveals an extensive use of brick masonry both in the overlooking buildings and in the surrounding walls. Although the early settlement flourished as far back as Etruscan times, the town’s present urban structure mostly took shape in the 11th century as Foiano gradually took on a significant jurisdictional and administrative role in the area as well as that of fortified centre where the “dominus” of the surrounding estates had his residence. The construction of the city walls should be seen as closely related with the key role the town played within the Florentine territory until the mid 1500s due to its close proximity to the borders with Perugia and the Sienese Republic. As late as the end of the 1400s, the oratory of the Ss. Trinità - arranged on a Greek cross plan – and the oratory of the Fraternita were built within the first perimeter of the 14th century city walls whilst the more imposing religious buildings were built between the two perimeters: the Collegiata, dedicated to St. Martin and St. Leonard and the Dominican convent (today San Michele Arcangelo). The last significant religious building to be erected in the old town is the all female Benedectine monastery of Santo Stefano, which was built right against the late-15th century city walls in 1581.
