He was awarded the Golden Palm of Cannes and no fewer than 4 Oscars. His best-known films are La dolce vita (1960), Otto e mezzo (1963) and Amarcord (1973). His films are usually dramas in which an imaginative character, often modelled after Fellini himself, searches for the meaning of his life. This quest is characterized by the frequent use of memories, dreams, fantasies and obsessions. The films usually do not have a clear linear story and are often more of a series of situations and events in which the characters experience all kinds of strange things. These events are often extravagantly designed with exaggerated sets, special costumes, lots of make-up, striking colours and picturesque locations. At the same time, the films provide social criticism because the person comes into contact with the imaginary world of the Italian aristocracy, the decadence of the bourgeoisie, the closedness of the conservative countryside or the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church. The main character is often surrounded by eccentric characters.AmarcordThe 1973 film portrays Fellini's memories of his sixteenth year in fascist Rimini. The adolescent Titta, Federico's alter ego, is bored in class, confesses his wet dreams about the red lady Gradisca and the tobacco saleswoman to his confessor and quarrels with his father. During Mussolini's visit, the Internationale rings out from a church tower to the fury of the Fascist blackshirts who fire furiously at the tower. Other significant events include the passing of the ocean liner Rex and the death of Titta's aunt.
