Irkutsk Routes: Along the main streets

📍 Irkutsk, Siberian Federal District, Russia

Estimated distance & time: 7.8km / 3 hrs

Irkutsk is situated in the Eastern Siberia on the shores of the Angara River. Historical Center of the city begins near the walls of Spasskaya Church. Epiphany Cathedral’s domes are near this church, as well as the monument to city’s first pioneers. The city center has a shade of antiquity. Stone buildings constructed by the gold-digging merchants in the XIX century made the city look like the Northern Capital of our country (which is Saint Petersburg). Even Anton Chekhov noticed the similarities of Irkutsk and St. Petersburg while he was traveling to Sakhalin via Irkutsk. We invite you to take a walk in the city center of Irkutsk and find out its history. Irkutsk, as the lyrics of one Soviet song has it, is a middle of Earth. The audio-guide is created as a part of the joint project «Irkutsk Routes» by the brotherhood in the name of St. Innocent of Irkutsk and by the Irkutsk Regional State Universal Scientific Library of Molchanov-Sibirskiy.The project is implemented with the support of the presidential grants fund. Alexey Bayfa is the photographer of the project.
