Khanty-Mansiysk. Kamchatka expeditions - Cya On The Road

The history of the campaigns of the Russian people beyond the Urals dates back to the XIII-XIV centuries. Even then, Novgorod ushkuyniks went on boats to Ugra to collect tribute from the Ob Ugrians living here. However, the development of the Trans-Urals began after Ermak’s arrival in Siberia. At the end of the 16th - beginning of the 17th century the first settlements appeared on the map: Tyumen, Tobolsk, Tara, Verkhoturye, Tomsk and also Samarovo - the ancestor town of the present Khanty-Mansiysk.Until the beginning of the 18thcentury, Samarovo was a village on the right bank of the Irtysh, twenty kilometers from its confluence with the Ob. The Russians learned about this place after the battle between the squads of Ermak and Prince Samara in 1582. The Samarovsky Yam appeared there in 1637 and became an important point of transport and trade.A hundred years later, the era of research expeditions began in the Russian Empire. Vitus Bering (1681-1741) made an enormous contribution to the study of Siberia and the Far East, organizing two Kamchatka expeditions with his team in 1725-1730 and 1733-1743. The route stretched from St. Petersburg through Samarovo and extended to the shores of the western continent. Along the Irtysh and Ob rivers, the travelers traveled through the unexplored territories beyond the Urals, reached Kamchatka and even the coast of Alaska. The future Khanty-Mansiysk, located at the intersection of the Ob and the Irtysh, became another point on the map of the great journeys inland.A new village - Ostyako-Vogulsk grew up five kilometers from Samarovo in 1931. It was renamed Khanty-Mansiysk 9 years later. The settlement received the status of a city in 1950 and the village of Samarovo became a part of it. This is how the well-known Khanty-Mansiysk appeared on the map - a city that proudly bears the names of indigenous peoples. Are you ready to walk through the land of the Ugric peoples and plunge into the atmosphere of the scientific breakthroughs of the 18th century?
