Churches of Varvarka
Varvarka is one of the oldest streets of Moscow. For the first time it was mentioned in 1434 as "Varskaya" because St. Maximus the Blessed, wonder-worker, was buried here.Varvarka stretches along the crest of a hill above the Moscow River. The street is winding and repeats the contours of the natural landscape. The historical layout has not survived here: it was destroyed in the 20th century because of plans to create grandiose buildings here. In 1967–2007 The Rossiya Hotel was located here. It was said to be the largest hotel in the world for the time of construction. Now Varvarka is adjacent to Zaryadye Park, one of the favorite places for Muscovites and guests of Moscow.
