Founded in 666AD by Erkenwald, later Bishop of London, Chertsey Abbey was the first religious house to be built in Surrey. It expanded its land and influence to become the fifth largest monastery in the country. However, in July 1537, the House was dissolved on the orders of Henry VIII and within a few decades all traces of its existence had disappeared.
