Well known for its splendid cathedral, its city center listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and its place among European capitals, Strasbourg conceals another history that we invite you to discover: that of the Jewish community. Strasbourg and more broadly Alsace indeed hold an exceptional place in the history of French Judaism. On the eve of the Revolution, more than half of the 40,000 French Jews lived in Alsace. In the following century, no less than 176 synagogues were built in Alsace, out of a total of around 250 in France. This shows the central place held by Jewish history and culture, integral components of the multicultural wealth of Alsace. This route through the city and its heritage will allow you to follow in the footsteps of Jewish life in Strasbourg.
