📍 Monaghan, Ireland; Castleblayney, Ireland

Estimated distance & time: 15.2km / 4 hrs 24 mins

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are actions to address societal challenges through the protection, sustainable management and restoration of ecosystems, benefitting both biodiversity and human well-being. In the context of climate change, this nature-based approach to solving societal challenges becomes increasingly important. The EU Interreg project ResiRiver aims to upscale and mainstream NbS, and achieves this through learning from the implementation of NbS in physical pilots and by looking at best practices from selected study pilots. This digital excursion focuses on the study pilot in the north of Ireland: The Dromore river catchment and Ballybay wetlands, where the Stranooden Group Water Scheme has implemented various NbS for source water protection, as the area's surface drinking water is polluted by substances like herbicides, pesticides and phosphates.NOTE: This tour is meant as a digital excursion, not to be travelled to in person as some of the sites are located on privately owned land.
