Murmashi Village - Cya On The Road

Murmashi is an urban-type settlement in the Kola district of the Murmansk Region, with a population of 9449 people (2023)The strange name of the village is not a Soviet abbreviation at all, but the result of a chain of metamorphoses. Vikings, or Normans, or, as the Pomors reinterpreted their self-name, Murmans, were once the undivided masters here. They gave it the name of the Murmansk Sea (since 1851 known as the Barents Sea), and accordingly its coast on the Kola Peninsula. Then everyone forgot about it, the Vikings sank into oblivion, and the Lapps (Sami) who settled on the Murmansk coast were called Murmashi more simply. The village of Murmashi was first mentioned in the "List of populated places of the Arkhangelsk province on May 1, 1922," which states that there are two courtyards with six inhabitants in the village of Murmashi. Before that, Lapps and Pomors lived here, who inhabited the shores of the Tuloma."In places of fishing, the lapps set up vezhs, summer-type buildings used mainly for sleeping and shelter from the weather. In winter cemeteries, vezha was insulated from the inside with skins, and from the outside with a thick layer of turf." The route consists of 13 attractions, which are arranged in an easy-to-view order.
