In the Middle Ages, Saint-Brieuc was a booming city, located on a strategic axis between land and sea. Founded around the seventh century, it developed thanks to its port and trade, attracting artisans, merchants and religious. The city was protected by ramparts and dominated by the Saint-Étienne cathedral, religious center and symbol of power. As in many medieval towns, there were lively markets, narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses, and manors owned by nobles and bishops. Saint-Brieuc was also an important place of passage, with hostels welcoming travellers and traders.
