With around 250 thousand inhabitants, it’s the seventh most populous city in the country. Due to its location in the center of Romania, Brașov is an important touristic destination in Romania. It is also the second most visited city in Romania, after Bucharest. With its medieval gates, gothic architecture, a village-like neighborhood, and a forested mountain right in the middle of the city, get ready to discover a unique destination. The city is a gateway to the rest of Transylvania, very close to popular destinations like Bran Castle, several ski resorts like Poiana Brașov or Predeal, the famous Peleș castle and many hiking spots. A millennial history along with local legends contributes to the charm of what many people consider as one of the most beautiful cities in Romania.  The name of the city has a history of its own, with several different versions and theories. In German it’s called Kronstadt, meaning Crown City and was used together with the Latin version Corona during the Middle Ages. In the same period, the Medieval Latin name Brassovia was being used. Supposedly, Brassovia and other variations like the Hungarian Brassó comes from the local river, Bârsa.
